When I first started reaching out to club owners, booked shows, festival bookers and other places I wanted to perform, I admit I was a little bit clueless. I used to give them my entire life story and every accolade I ever had — “look for me in the background of The Chappelle Show, episode 1”— like anyone cared!
I told them about how I started comedy, and sent them as much information as possible, not realizing that people are busy and, as much as I wished they did, people don’t want to read a missive all about me.
Back when I started comedy, you had to send in a V.H.S. tape. Imagine how expensive and cumbersome this was. But somehow, we all made it happen. I used to carry a backpack full of V.H.S. tapes around with me with my set on them, like some kind of demented, ambitious schoolgirl, just in case I ran into any celebrity comedians in my comedy outings, which happened surprisingly often. I even handed one of my V.H.S. tapes to a younger Bob Saget who I chanced upon outside of Caroline’s early one evening.
***This paragraph makes me think of an old Sam Kinison joke about Dr. Ruth sucking dick on horseback. God, he was so incredible to me when I first started performing! Still love him. But I digress.***
