5 Questions With A Comedian: Scott Dikkers
What is the largest amount of money you’ve ever made on a comedy project?
If you’ve been Rip Van Winkling it for the past 20 years or so, I forgive you for not knowing about and loving “The Onion.” But if you’re a big fan, like the rest of the world, then you have today’s featured comedian to thank for it. Scott Dikkers created “The Onion” and, as the co-founder and former editor-in-chief, was responsible for helping develop it into a planetary-wide comedic satirical news juggernaut. Scott is an author of several books, including “How To Write Funny,” #1 New York Times and #1 Amazon bestseller, “Our Dumb Century,” which sold more than a million copies, and “Our Dumb World,” another New York Times bestseller.
Scott has also created an online comedy business school, called Comedy Business School, which I have taken and am a huge fan of. It served me better than all of the comedy books and classes I’ve read over the years combined, and trust me, I’ve digested them all. Call me a disciple in the church of Scott. He also writes No Dikkering Around, a Substack publication that offers smart advice on writing and performing in comedy.
Without further ado, here are 5 Questions with Scott Dikkers.
1. Do you still have any affiliation or relationship with The Onion?
No, except that many of the current writers are people I hired or who took my classes.
2. What is the largest amount of money you’ve ever made on a comedy project? What was the amount and what was the project?
The Onion, which made me millions of dollars. This begs the question, Why am I no longer affiliated with The Onion?
3. Are you still in love with comedy?
Yes I am.
4. Is there a comedian who you most identify with out there? A thought doppleganger or a kindred comedy spirit?
This changes over time, and right now it’s Nick Griffin. We’re about the same age and his jokes are just perfect.
5. Can you talk about your favorite comedy friend who did you right?
There are many who did me right. Tim Clue is probably the comedian who did me the rightest. He mentored me, coached me, and taught me how to turn my fledgling stand-up into a lucrative career on the speaking circuit.
