Five Greeting Card Companies That Are Buying Your One Liners (+ 20 or so more)
Plus their contact info + resources to get started
Hi! Thanks for reading The Museletter. I write this newsletter because I’m obsessed with comedy, and have spent a long time in this world as a performer, so I know a few things about the industry. I ask readers for a $7 per month donation to encourage me along. But the truth is, I am going to write the thing whether I get paid to or not. However, I appreciate being egged on, and in return, AMA. K? I will A your Qs with heart and humor, or something really similar to it.
Just a few interesting things before I jump into your new side gig writing greeting cards.
How long until we are 3D printing AI people?
I spent Monday following Kamala Harris around for my side gig as a political reporter. Check it out here. It’s kind of strange to have “political reporter” be my side gig, but I still have a big passion for stand up comedy, and will probably never officially quit.
We checked my kids Halloween candy for poison, which was silly, because they list it right in the ingredients.
I have been doing side gigs and hustles since I started in comedy, because, the truth is, that’s how a lot of people survive in this business. Only a very small portion go on to get jobs on SNL, staff writing jobs on TV shows, become full-time touring stand up comedians or get their own TV shows.
Statistics point to there being about 100,000 comedians in America across varying levels of success, with about 1000, or about 1%, who would be considered traditionally famous or successful—that is, nationally or internationally recognized.
The rest of us have to smatter together a living in comedy, while we work towards becoming 1001.
One of the ways to bring in some money while pursuing the dream is, writing greeting cards.
These five outlets are places to look into for this kind of work.
Oatmeal Studios accepts jokeful ideas for greeting cards. Whether it’s a one liner, or a funny limerick, this card company will pay you $100 for your quips, and also accepts artist submissions.
American Greetings requires writers to mail them ideas the old fashioned way. First, writers must complete a disclosure agreement form and send it and any jokes or bits to the Idea Submission Team at the following address:
American Greetings Corporation
One American Boulevard
Cleveland, OH 44145-8151
Avanti Press is another card line that asks writers to send ideas in via snail mail.
Hallmark doesn’t really take unsolicited ideas, but they do hire creatives. Bookmark this tab and set a reminder to check back monthly or weekly.
Someecards is looking for writers here.
While Rita Rudner, Kathy Griffin, Dave Chappelle, Phyllis Diller, Joan Rivers, Larry David and Jeff Foxworthy are household names now, they all did stints writing greeting cards at one point. Maybe the path to your success has a side road that includes penning someone’s birthday wish.
