Welcome to a *free post* window. All newsletter installments will be free through June 8th. After that, I’ll ask each muse (that’s you) to support The Museletter for $7/month or $70/year. Included in that rate, you receive your own comedy consultant (just ask for help and get it), coach (let’s work on your bits together), and comedy confidante (tell me who hurt you, let’s commiserate). You also get:
Access to my awesome comedy PR workshop
A list of comedy contests
A list of outlets that buy jokes
A booking email template
Access to all the posts
New awesome comedy resources I share on a weekly basis
and then send a message with what kind of help you need.
My birthday is on June 8th. I have always liked my birthday because it’s at the end of the school year, so I knew when my birthday came, school was almost over, which made me happy because, like plenty of kids, I kind of hated school.
It also indicates the beginning of the summer, my favorite season, when the nights are long and warm and the streets are lousy with random kids running all over the place and ice cream and swimming and reading marathons and drawing and movie watching and beach trips making up the long, lazy days. And what even was bedtime? It wasn’t a thing as a kid in the summertime, at least, not for me.
Summertime really started getting fun for me in 6th grade, and kind of never lost its magic. As I got older, summer came to mean cold, sweet drinks and summer solstice and boys and tour season (I was always kind of boy crazy). How do you feel about summer?
If you are thinking of sending me a birthday card, I’d love that! I used to ask people to write me “bad poems” for my birthday, and I think I’ll bring it back. Send bad poems via email to jessdelfino@gmail.com.
Here’s a bad poem that Sam Reich of Dropout (formerly College Humor) wrote for me years ago:
And if you’ve got money to burn and you really like me, here’s my Amazon wish list.
This year, I’ll be performing on my birthday. For many years, I made sure to perform on my birthday. I often had show-parties where all my friends would perform and I’d invite people to write and read bad birthday poems to me (like Sam’s above) and it was a blast. Later, I started the Funny Songs Fest and it ran a week or so before my birthday, so it always felt kind of like a big birthday party. But I haven’t performed on my birthday in nearly a decade.
I’m excited to revisit the tradition this year. I have a few comedian friends joining me and I expect it to be a real throw down.
Another fun fact about my birthday is that I share it with Joan Rivers and Prince, two of my favorites.
Here is a list of some of the most famous comedian’s birthdays. Do you share a birthday with any of them? I found that Ricky Gervais and Bill Burr’s birthdays are close to mine.
So what do you do with this info, besides memorize it and whip it out as a Rain Man-esque party trick? Well, send your favorite comedians a card, of course. Maybe they’ll get it, maybe they won’t, but it (probably) can’t hurt anything. I say probably, because some comedians (and people) get nervous when strangers approach them.
But if you know your heart is in the right place, send a PDF card to their publicist or agent. Just don’t forget to make it funny, or at least fun.
Here’s a sample card I made for Bill Burr, who you may notice has a birthday coming up soon (right after mine.)
