This is how I dressed to perform at Just For Laughs, a gig not gotten by an agent

In 2018ish, I got a call to join a writer’s room, along with comedians Aparna Nancherla, Rob Cantrell and others for an Adult Swim show called, “Krft Punk Goes To Washington, D.C.,” (the show ended up having its name changed to Krft Punk’s Political Party) starring Eric Andre, Hannibal Burress, and Rachel Dolezal, and the creator of and comedian who played Krft Punk, Dan Curry. Krft Punk made many appearances over the years on The Eric Andre Show. The character spoke in a robot voice, did weird gross things and everyone got annoyed when he showed up. Eric would usually end up telling him to get lost. It was a super funny character and it made sense that Krft was finally getting a spin off.

Krft’s success was also good for me — the gig was well-paid, it was a super fun time working with peers I admire, and a nice little writing credit for Adult Swim. The job was also in my neighborhood (Chinatown) which was really convenient, and somewhat rare—these kind of jobs were often in midtown or Brooklyn. Just an all around awesome gig.

A reader wrote in recently and asked, “How did you get that gig?”

This was intriguing to me, because it’s a question I’ve asked, both aloud and silently at dozens of my peers’ gigs and achievements over the years. And in general, the comedy industry makes a really big deal about keeping everything a fricking secret, your life can go by, and you haven’t been able to crack these stupid little riddles because people are weirdly protective of the information, and jealous, and small minded about it all.

Well, F that, I say. I’m going to tell you exactly how I got that gig, step by step. Here’s how.
