Recently, someone asked me how to get more stage time without doing open mics. I am weird, because I love open mics.
For some reason, open mics get kind of a bad rap, and it feels like the vibe is that they are only for amateurs, not professionals.
I just don’t agree. To me, open mics are a haven of opportunity where anything is possible. You can meet the most amazing people there who will help propel your career when you least expect it, book gigs, perfect material… I just don’t see the downsides of doing open mics, especially in smaller towns where mics make up a good amount of available stage time. Make the best of them, and give all you’ve got to any performance you do anywhere, is my take.
But if you can’t or won’t lower yourself to the humble open mic, or want more “professional” stage time, no worries. Here are a few fool proof ways to get solid stage time.
Start a podcast
There’s a reason so many comedians have podcasts. It forces comedians to come up with material to fill the show, and you can invite guests, use it as a springboard to get ahead, get sponsors, and grow an audience. A benefit of creating this platform is that you’re increasing your comedic network with comedians who can and will invite you to be part of their shows.
Start your own stage show
Stage shows offer many of the same benefits of podcasts (but with a podcast, you don’t necessarily have to be wearing pants—just don’t let your audience know that). Stage shows offer the benefit of live show energy, drop-in guests and developing a relationship with a venue owner, which could come in handy if you want to do a special taping event or need a good place to hide from the police.
Tell your friends
Non-comedians can be excellent sources of stage time. They assemble events, too—art shows, business meetings, ribbon cutting ceremonies, grand openings, festivals, parades and more, and if you put the word out that you’re looking for stage time, they may be very accommodating and allow you to emcee their event or do a short comedy set up top. Just keep putting the word out there.

Scott Dikkers' substack led me here and I'm glad. Helpful advice and your positive attitude about open mics put a pep in my otherwise scared step regarding mics. Thanks!
