Did You Do That Thing You Were Going To Do In The First Week Of 2024
...to jump start your comedy?
It feels like it’s been a lot longer than 7 days. How many jokes have you written so far? How many pages of that script? How many articles? Pitches? Chapters of the book? How many mics you get up at? How many shows have you booked? How many short videos or clips did you post onto Instagram? Did you work on your website? What I’m trying to get at here is, what have you done in the past week to progress your comedy career?
Have you taken meetings with your agent or been trying to find a new one? Have you submitted your work to any competitions or for any awards? Did you work out? Get a new, updated look for the stage? Did you get a new piece of gear that will take you to the next level (a cordless mic/mic stand/iPad/whatever)?
I ask this not to try to shame you into doing more or better work—productivity/output is not the only metric that outlines our achievements, we know this. I’m asking to show you that there is so much to do in a day, a week, a month, a year, to get to where you want to go. The journey of 1000 miles / 10,000 hours, and all that jazz.
Productivity also looks like taking a long walk. Spending more time with your loved ones. Cracking that book you’ve been meaning to read. Journaling. Doing quality work at your job. Taking a long, luxurious nap. Focusing on your health. Working on your model airplane. Making better dietary choices. Calling your friend. Talking to your therapist. Clocking some Netflix hours. Going on a vacation, or just taking a day trip into the mountains. Getting some menial tasks done on your to do list like grocery shopping, or laundry.
And of course—writing jokes about it all, along the way.
So, how’s 2024 been going so far?
