The Time I Spent The Night At Jim Norton's House For A Month

In a previous post, I recounted a pep talk given to me by comedian Kevin Hart (back when he was Lil’ Kev) one night outside NYC’s Comedy Cellar. He introduced me to a comedian named Jim Norton, and the rest is about to be a story in this newsletter.
Jim picked me up that evening around midnight or so, after he’d finished performing his sets at the Cellar. As we headed to his home, which at the time was in New Jersey, I admit, I was feeling a little nervous. I didn’t know this Jim guy very well, but I trusted Kevin, and I felt pretty confident that he probably wouldn’t put me into harm’s way. Probably.
Plus, I was kind of excited to get to meet a senior comedian, and talk to him about his exciting, high paying job working in comedy, and all the glitz and glamour surely involved. Little did I know, he was probably shuffling along just like any of us, trying to venture upward as best he could. I knew he was a bit ahead of where I was, though, having done comedy for much longer, and being a staple at The Cellar. My enrapture with a legit professional outweighed my shaky nerves.
The ride consisted of typical get to know you small talk. I probably interviewed him a little bit about comedy like a schmuck. I shudder imagining myself asking questions like, “So, do you have any advice for a new comedian?” or some other trite ice breaker, but I’m sure I did.
