What To Wear On Stage

Me in one of my typical slightly bizarre get ups. “Sassy teacher—Mary Poppins meets Janis Joplin” is how I once described my style.

Since I’ve been doing comedy for 100 years like some kind of Rip Van Stand-Up, I have given a lot of thought to many aspects of what I do and why I do it, and one thing I come back to often is what I’m wearing on stage and why.

Have you ever given this any thought?

You may be thinking, “I only think about being funny,” and that is a good mindset, and I like it. It’s an important mindset. But there are other aspects to being a great performer besides being funny. Since all eyes are on you when you’re standing on the stage, it’s worth taking a few minutes to consider what threads might best support what you’re saying.

Many professional people put effort into their style, and it’s always interesting to me why they do what they do, stylistically.

Infamous TV personality and painter Bob Ross’s hair didn’t come in a natural tight perm/fro. It was a distinct decision he made, with the thought that he wanted his hair to look unique and also not require a lot of upkeep.
